Jonesborough

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Manley Coates, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who left us on December 14, 2024, at the age of 70. Born in 1954, Jim lived a life full of love, dedication, struggles, and joy, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his family and all who knew him.
Jim was the devoted husband of his wife, Frances, of 52 years. Together, they shared a bond built on love, respect, and unwavering commitment. As a father, he was a constant source of support and strength to his sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Monika, Andy and Holly, and Bryan and Jessie, offering guidance and unconditional love in every aspect of their lives. Jim's pride and joy were his grandchildren—Clayton, Ezekiel, Emily, and Madelyn—who brought him immeasurable happiness. He lived for his family, and his legacy will continue to live on through them.
A dedicated worker, Jim spent many years as a mechanic in Indiana before transitioning to maintenance work in North Carolina, where he was known for his hard work, reliability, and integrity. Jim also proudly served in the U.S. Army for 10 years, a period of his life that he held close to his heart.
Jim was a man of many passions. He was a lifelong car enthusiast who loved attending National Hot Rod Association races, and he was a devoted fan of the Raiders football team. He had a deep love for music, particularly classic rock, and especially Pink Floyd. His larger-than-life personality, strength, and caring nature made him a cherished figure to his family and close friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved son, Eric, and his brother, Fred. His remaining siblings—Rhi, Ruth, and Eva—helped shape the man he became, and he carried fond memories of his parents, Catherine and Eugene, who were there for him throughout his youth. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit will forever shine through the memories and love he shared with his family. Heaven has welcomed an incredible man, and he will be missed beyond measure.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held in the coming days, where his immediate family will gather to honor the incredible husband, father, and grandfather he was. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice in his memory.
Rest in peace, Jim. You will forever be loved, remembered, and missed. Your life was a beautiful testament to family, love, and living life to the fullest.
