Sandra Busick Akers
March 7, 1947 - September 21, 2024
Sandra (Sandy) Busick Akers, age 77, of Limestone, Tennessee, died unexpectedly Saturday, September 21, 2024, after experiencing a brain aneurysm at her home. Born in Cripple Creek, Virginia, on March 7, 1947, to James Eldridge Busick and Marvella Quisenberry Busick, she was preceded in death by her father.
Valedictorian of her Rural Retreat High School Class of 1965 and voted Most Studious by her classmates, Sandy participated in a variety of school clubs and was on the varsity cheer squad. She received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and subsequent Master of Science in Education degree from Radford University, kicking off a life spent dedicated to helping others. Early in her career, she taught high school math courses in Bath County, then at Glenvar High School and the then brand-new Salem High School, earning an inaugural Teacher of the Year award. She and her husband at the time, Frank Akers, were both popular teachers who hosted many student events, and Sandy was ever grateful to him for the interstellar contribution resulting in her two children -- a source of much pride! Sandy shifted focus slightly to become a guidance counselor at Arnold R. Burton Vocational Technical School in Roanoke where she could continue to make an impact with students, work she found very rewarding. A career change would lead her to real estate, where she enjoyed being a relocation director at Owens & Company and could still help others by introducing new residents to the wonderful Roanoke area. She was quite active in the Roanoke community, serving on the Chamber of Commerce, and she very much enjoyed dancing at local festivals to Motown and shag beach music, meeting people, and getting out and about with her friends. The growth of her spiritual journey led her west for a while, where Sandy took her real estate expertise to other states where she lived, holding licenses in New Mexico, Colorado, and then North Carolina before retiring to become a doting grandmother, her most favorite role of all.
Sandy loved to travel to spiritual destinations around the world and find connections with others in her travels, continuously sharing her message of love and light. Her preferred place to be, however, was anywhere her cherished granddaughters were. Sandy was a gifted healer, dedicating her energy to meditating and praying for humanity, which also allowed her to grow her amazing network of friends. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden, giving away much of the produce, including thousands of marigold and zinnia seeds. And of course, the Cat Distribution System ensured that Sandy was also busy looking out for her fur child Smokey, who showed up at her door immediately upon her move to Limestone.
She is survived by her daughter Kim Akers and son Chris Akers (Kelly); three granddaughters, Carmen, Madeline, and Marvella; mother Marvella Busick; two brothers, Richard Busick (Carole) and James Busick; two sisters, Nancy Herczeg and Melissa Carter (Russell), as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins; ex-husband Frank Akers.
A gathering to celebrate Sandy and spread her ashes will be held at a future date in the Cripple Creek, Virginia, area. In lieu of flowers to the family, please consider an act of kindness in her memory, whether it is looking out for a neighbor, donating your time, or paying something forward. Love and light to all!
